Joint vs. Spliff vs. Blunt?

What's the difference between a joint, a spliff, and a blunt? Does it matter? And why are there so many words for smoking weed?

At the end of the day, you'll never be crucified for saying the "wrong" thing. You may run into some asshole who steps in to correct you, but what makes his definition "right"? This is the vocabulary I use with my (American) friends:

  • Spliff: Cannabis mixed with tobacco, rolled in paper. I don't like these. :(

  • Joint: Pure cannabis rolled in paper into the classic cone. Usually about a gram, sometimes less, sometimes more. Sometimes fancy, sometimes droopy. Always good. :)

  • Blunt: Pure cannabis rolled in a tobacco leaf. You either unroll a cigar or use leaves made for this. The leaf gives you a light buzz on top of the high, and people usually pack a lot in, around 2 to 5 grams. This one is a rare treat for me. I also can't roll these for shit.

Since moving abroad, I've had to accept that these definitions aren't universal. People here usually call a cannabis-and-tobacco mix a joint. And pure cannabis? A blunt. 🫠

I used to be really stubborn. I insisted my California vocabulary was superior to my Euro friends'. That hard-headed mentality got me into a pickle or two. 😅

Take the time I was at a Tash Sultana concert, such a good show.🎵 It was outside, the night was perfect, the vibes were good, the music was unreal, and nothing completes an outdoor concert like some Mary Juana. 🍃 At some point during the set, a friend and I swapped what each of us called a "joint." This is where we got into trouble. His had tobacco. Mine was pure. My friend ended the night completely zooted, and I had to dip 10 minutes early to go to the bathroom. 💩(Cigarettes are a hipster's laxative, if you didn't know.)

Moral of the story: Even if you have a definition you stand by, you might have to let it go depending on where you are.

Stay Dank Mamas! And keep rolling!
